Frederick W. “Fred” (Beanie) Gaines, Sr., 80, of Downingtown, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2016, at his residence. He was the beloved husband of Patricia D. (nee DeVries) Gaines, enjoying 58 years of marriage together.

Fred was a 1954 graduate of Ridgewood High School in New Jersey. He then went on to college, earning a bachelor’s degree from Newark College of Engineering in 1961, and earning a master’s degree from Union College in 1972. Fred was employed at Lockheed Martin (formerly General Electric) as Manager of Shop Operations, retiring in 1997 with 36 years service. Fred’s capacity for leadership was embodied by serving the public as a Supervisor for Uwchlan Township for over 13 years.

An automobile enthusiast, Fred had a passion for classic and antique cars and served for 2 terms as President of The Chester County Antique Car Club. He also enjoyed working with wood and collecting tools. He was an amateur radio operator, call letters WA3NUG, and a member of the National Association for Amateur Radio. Fred was a 53-year member of the Hawthorne-Fortitude Lodge, #200, F.&A.M. When his son was in Boy Scouts, Fred served as Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 227 in Springfield, Delaware County, PA.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Nancy G. (Cooper) Colbert, of Downingtown, Fred Gaines, Jr., of San Diego, CA, Judy (Robert) Gaines Jeanes, of Wayne, Marilyn G. (Dann) Eaton, of Pottstown, Carolyn G. Collevecchio, of West Chester, and Susan G. (Adam) Gaines, of King of Prussia; brother, Stanley L. (Edythe) Gaines, of New Hampshire; sister-in-law, Bernice (George) Schneider, of Manchester, New Jersey; grandchildren, Carrie, D. Cooper III., Dylan, Austin, Cassie, and AJ; and great-grandson, Colton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.


Elwood S. ‘Woody’ Sorensen, 60, of Glenmoore, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016.

He was the husband of Lisa Schaller Sorensen, with whom he shared 29 years of marriage.

Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late Martin and Sara Steel Sorensen.

Woody worked for 29 years for Uwchlan Township, was a life member of Lionville Fire Co., and a member of Exton United Methodist Church.

A proud Phillies fan, he enjoyed camping, working with his hands, riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Woody is survived by his children, Tabitha Johnson (Anthony), Sabrina Sorensen (fiancé Cameron); granddaughter, Charlotte Johnson; sisters, Mary Farquharson and Dorothy Hahn.
