[ARCHIVED] Uwchlan Township Earns Silver Certification in Sustainability

NF Sustainability Award

We’re excited to share some great news — Uwchlan Township has been officially recognized as a Silver Certified Sustainable Community through the Sustainable Pennsylvania program!

This certification places us among a select group of high-performing municipalities across the Commonwealth that are making real progress toward building communities that thrive — environmentally, socially, and economically. We’re in great company, with Caln, West Bradford, and New Garden Townships, and West Chester Borough, also being Silver Certified in Chester County.

Earning Silver certification means we’ve made measurable progress in areas like Community design and land use; Energy efficiency; Health and wellness; Intergovernmental cooperation; Recycling and waste reduction; Fiscal responsibility; and Internal management and operations.

“Uwchlan Township has a long history of commitment to saving taxpayer dollars, using resources efficiently, and applying best practices in municipal operations and community development. We’re proud to be recognized and to be part of this statewide community of good governance.” - Township Manager, Robert Kagel.

Heart of Uwchlan Project plays key role in certification

A standout initiative that helped us achieve this recognition is the Heart of Uwchlan project — a volunteer-led project through our Environmental Advisory Council that encourages residents to plant native species throughout the community. This effort not only supports biodiversity but also helps manage stormwater more effectively, conserves natural resources, and adds beauty to our neighborhoods.

Toni Gorkin, a lead volunteer for the project, praised what the project has achieved since its inception in 2019.

“Through the Heart of Uwchlan gardens, educational outreach, seed collecting, and native plant giveaways, this project has become a shining example of what community stewardship can look like when we all work together.”

About the Sustainable Pennsylvania program

The Sustainable Pennsylvania program, run by the Pennsylvania Municipal League in partnership with Sustainable Pittsburgh, recognizes townships, boroughs, and cities that are working hard to conserve resources, save money, and make their communities vibrant and resilient.

At its core, the program celebrates municipalities that are actively building for the future — balancing community well-being, environmental stewardship, and economic development.

As Joylette Portlock, Ph.D., Executive Director of Sustainable Pittsburgh, explains:

“Sustainable Pennsylvania provides clear and recognizable sustainability objectives that help communities like Uwchlan foster thriving, vibrant, and lasting places to live.”

We also received a special nod from John Brenner, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Municipal League, who congratulated Uwchlan for “leading the way in applying sustainability to both our operations and within our community.”

Thank you to our community

We’re proud of this recognition and grateful to our volunteers, residents, staff, and community partners who make sustainability a part of everyday life here in Uwchlan. Together, we’re continuing to build a community that’s strong, responsible, and ready for the future.
