[ARCHIVED] Winter sowing to bring spring plantings

Throughout January, Toni Gorkin from our Environmental Advisory Council hosted several seed sowing workshops as part of the Sustainable Uwchlan initiative.

Volunteers were invited to sow seeds in plastic jugs for winter stratification. This involves filling plastic jugs with soil, adding the seeds and then sealing them inside. The process helps to simulate winter conditions for the seeds and supports germination.

In spring, the seeds will germinate and turn into seedlings. These will be used to replenish and expand our three Heart of Uwchlan gardens, as well as growing the pollinator garden and meadow in the Rhondda development.

Students sowing seeds at workshop At the Lionville YMCA, Toni shared her expertise, guiding the Garden Group of the Forever Well program as they aim to replenish their raised plant beds. Then, at Downingtown High School East, Toni conducted a session with the Environment Club, igniting young minds with passion and purpose as they learned about the importance of environmental stewardship.

All the plantings are native and include milkweed (for the monarch butterfly caterpillars), echinacea, goldenrod, boneset, and many more. All in all, over 60 plastic jugs have been sown with seeds!

Thank you to all the volunteers who participated in these workshops! These seedlings will not only help create places of beauty in our community; they will ensure sanctuaries for our vital pollinators in the seasons to come.
