Uwchlan Township proudly joins Pennsylvania communities in celebrating Local Government Week (April 14-18), recognizing the essential role local government plays in daily life.

“Local Government Week is an opportunity for residents to learn about the services we provide,” said Township Manager Robert Kagel. “From maintaining roads and public safety to managing waste and parks, local government is part of the foundation of our daily lives.”

A Legacy of Growth & Service

Over the years, Uwchlan Township has expanded alongside its growing population and economy. What began as small meetings in homes has evolved into a modern municipal operation balancing development with historical and environmental preservation.

• Before 1960 – Township Supervisors held meetings in homes or community spaces like the Odd Fellow’s Hall or Fire House.
• 1965 – Leo LaChance became Uwchlan’s first full-time Township Manager.
• 1965 – The first Comprehensive Plan was published to guide responsible development under zoning ordinances.
• 1960s – The Planning Commission, Municipal Authority, and Parks & Recreation Committee were established to support infrastructure and recreational needs.
• 1967 – William Brice was appointed as Uwchlan Township’s first Police Chief.
• 1967-1986 – The Uwchlan Police Department served Upper Uwchlan until Upper Uwchlan formed its own department in 1986.
• 2024 – The Police Department responded to over 13,000 calls annually.

Dedicated Staff & Community Commitment

Uwchlan’s success is driven by its committed staff, including several members with 25+ years of service, such as Fire Marshal Mike Holmes (35 years), Treasurer Susan Bernhard (32 years), and Police Chief Scott Alexander (25 years).

Today, Uwchlan Township’s Administration oversees the daily operations of multiple departments while working closely with the elected Board of Supervisors, committees, councils, and boards to implement key initiatives. The Finance Department oversees all financial aspects of the township, including the annual budget, accounts payable/receivable, and utility billing. In December 2024, the township presented a balanced budget of $24.86 million allocated across multiple funds. 

The Building & Zoning Department is responsible for ensuring safe, organized, and compliant development within our community while the Public Works Department maintains roads, waste, and storm water systems, and addresses resident concerns. The Road Division is responsible for more than 80 miles of roadway and out storm water network, handling everything from general maintenance and major reconstruction to snow and salt operations in winter. The Sewer Division manages wastewater infrastructure, including the Eagleview and DARA Wastewater Treatment Plants. The Parks Division maintains nearly 400 acres of open space, including several public parks and a 12-mile network of trails and walkways.

As we celebrate Local Government Week, we honor the dedication of our team and reaffirm our mission: to support our community’s growth, preserve its history, and plan for a thriving future.
