[ARCHIVED] Fireplace Restoration Underway at Cadwalader House

Open fireplace with brick exposed

The Uwchlan Township Historical Commission is working to restore the original fireplace in the historical John Cadwalader House.

The fireplace, which had been obscured by modern alterations for decades is receiving some much-needed attention. The recent removal of the oil heat cinder block chimney revealed the original fireplace and a beehive oven, marking the first step in a journey to return these features to their former glory.

The next phase of the restoration will involve carefully removing the cement and mortar that cover the fireplace stones. This will allow the team to clean the stones thoroughly before beginning the labor-intensive process of repointing the stonework. This project is anticipated to be completed by the spring of 2025.

The Historical Cadwalader House

The John Cadwalader House, named after its original owner, traces its history back to 1712. John Cadwalader, a Welsh Quaker and farmer, built a large log home on land owned by David Lloyd, a prominent local figure. Over time, the Cadwalader family expanded and sold off much of their land, but they retained one acre for the Uwchlan Friends Meeting, which eventually became a key Quaker site in the area.

The foundation of the original log home still stands today, though it was replaced by a large stone house built in the 1820s. This historic site, with its deep connection to early Uwchlan Township, continues to be preserved by the township and serves as the meeting place for the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission. The house is open for public tours from April to November on the first Sunday of every month.

A Legacy of Restoration: The Pugh Room

This isn’t the first time the Township has restored a significant piece of Uwchlan Township’s history. In 2007, while renovating the Township Administration Building, the team uncovered another beehive oven and fireplace. This discovery led to the restoration of what is now known as the Pugh Room, named after Hugh Pugh, who purchased the property in 1735.

During this restoration, masons removed rubble covering the beehive oven, painstakingly rebuilt the stone walls, and constructed a wood storage box. A reproduction candelabrum, electrified for modern use, and period-appropriate furniture were added to complete the 18th-century look. Today, the Pugh Room is open to the public during office hours, offering visitors a glimpse into the township's past.
