The caller then informs the resident that it has come to their attention that the resident owes money to the respective agency and that an immediate payment is required. Arrangements are then made for a payment to be made from the resident to the caller. This type of call and follow up financial transaction is likely a fraudulent activity on the part of the caller. Agencies such as the IRS, The Treasury Department, and local utility companies do not conduct business in this manner. If you receive any of these phone calls, do not offer any form of payment over the phone. Terminate the call and then take the time to contact the named agency directly and verify if they had been attempting to contact you.
